About

Roz Sohnen

HONORED FACULTY/FILM

Roz began her filmmaking career (writer/director) with her award winning narrative short, PINK, which is in distribution through Phoenix Films.

She has worked as a screenwriter and taught screenwriting for many years. The last five years were spent teaching Screenwriting to graduate students in the David Lynch MFA Program in Cinema based in Fairfield, Iowa.

Roz has produced and directed, edited, and written numerous film and video projects over the last 25 years. Some highlights include her role as Associate Producer on the PBS series, THEY CAME FOR GOOD (The History of the Jews in America); producing interactive videos for the AUDUBON Society; and her work as producer/director of a series of short documentary films for the MANHATTAN SCHOOL FOR EARLY LEARNING.

She has been a consultant to TRH Princess Marina and Prince Michael of Greece, regarding films about current artists. Roz has also produced and directed a series on NYC gentrification for the NY Mortgage Company, with special programs on the new "Harlem" and the renovation of the Brooklyn waterfront.

Storytelling has always been her passion, both documentary and narrative. She has written many award winning feature screenplays. Her documentary film, An American Quilt, (a festival favorite) is currently in distribution through Parallel Lines/ Forward in Time.com. She received major grants from the Masterwork Music and Art Foundation for this film.

Roz was a member of the Digital Filmmaking faculty at the Art Institute of NYC for ten years, where she taught screenwriting, as well as other film courses. One of which she created, LOOKING AT FILM became an essential course for student filmmaker education.  Students learned  how using the tools of the craft resulted in moving audiences emotionally.

Roz is a graduate of the Professional Screenwriting program at UCLA. She holds an MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she was honored with the Paulette Goddard Scholarship and received the Judge’s Special Merit Award for Directing.

Her decision to make TheROZMethod available to the public grew out of her desire to share her extensive knowledge and love for movies with everyone,  not just graduate students.
